Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge particular decisions made by the official, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
