Clovis, New Mexico (pop. 32,667) is located along the center median of the state very close to its easterly border with Texas. Clovis is billed as the "the gateway to the Land of Enchantment," serving as a strategic location for business and industry to New Mexico and west Texas, and as the only substantial city for 100 miles. Clovis also serves as home to Cannon Air Force Base and a great relationship with the Air Force has developed over the years. One of the most prominent facts about Clovis is its proximity to Blackwater Draw, one of the most well-known and significant sites in North American archaeology.
Another great attraction in Clovis is its zoo, the 2nd largest in New Mexico. The Hillcrest Park & Zoo is home to over 500 animals. Come face to face with burly buffalo, large reptiles, and ferocious cats, including Sabre, a white Bengal tiger. Formerly a Las Vegas show cat, but now just one of the more wild Clovis residents. The Zoo also has lots of playground equipment for children to enjoy, a basketball court, a sunken garden and plenty of picnic areas available. Another thing to consider seeing while in Clovis is the Blackwater Draw Museum.. Blackwater Draw, or Blackwater Locality No. 1, is a recently appointed National Historic Landmark and for good reason: 13,000 years of occupation has given us great insight into the people that lived here before and their artifacts and history can be seen at the museum. Clovis is perhaps best known for its place in the pages of Rock and Roll history: the "Clovis Sound" made popular by such greats as Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, was created and recorded in Clovis at the Norman Petty 7th Street Studio. Petty's golden ears helped dozens of popular country, rock, and pop musicians who recorded at the Studios-Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings and many others.
Clovis is approximately 220 miles east of Albuquerque and 105 miles southwest of Amarillo, Texas.
